BOSTON -- Red Sox fans will have the chance to watch power-hitting prospect Bobby Dalbec take aim at Fenway South's replica Green Monster this spring.
Dalbec, ranked No. 6 among the Red Sox's Top 30 prospects by MLB Pipeline, highlights the list of 10 non-roster Spring Training invitees announced by the club on Thursday. This marks the first invite to Major League camp for the right-handed hitter.
The 23-year-old Dalbec is coming off of a breakout season in which he belted 32 homers to go along with 109 RBIs as he split time between Class A Advanced Salem and Double-A Portland.
The third baseman was named the organization's Minor Leaguer of the Year for offense and defense, marking the first time that one player has won both awards since the Red Sox started giving out them in 2005.
"I think it took a special performance on both sides of the ball," Red Sox director of player development Ben Crockett said in September. "From an evaluative standpoint, from a numbers standpoint, he stood out in both areas pretty significantly."
After starring at the University of Arizona, the Red Sox picked Dalbec in the fourth round of the 2016 Draft. In his 248 games as a pro, he has slashed .273/.365/.529 with 52 homers and 183 RBIs.
Right-hander Mike Shawaryn, one of the Red Sox's top pitching prospects, will also be in Major League camp for the first time. As the team's No. 9 prospect on Pipeline, he went 9-10 with a 3.44 ERA in 26 appearances, including 25 starts, between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket in 2018.
The other invitees announced Thursday are as follows: Catcher Austin Rei; outfielders Bryce Brentz, Rusney Castillo, Tate Matheny and Cole Sturgeon; shortstop C.J. Chatham; utility player Chad De La Guerra; and first baseman Josh Ockimey.
Castillo came to the Red Sox amid much fanfare after defecting from Cuba and signing a seven-year, $72.5 million contract in August of 2014, but he hasn't played in the Majors since '17. Due to the luxury-tax implications of his contract, it's doubtful Castillo will make it back to Boston's 40-man roster before his contract expires at the end of the '20 season.
Overall, the Sox have now invited 20 players to camp to go along with the 39 players on the roster.
