Red Sox do not tender 2014 contracts to right-handed pitcher Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Kalish

BOSTON, MA -- The Boston Red Sox today announced that the club will not tender 2014 contracts to right-handed pitcher Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Kalish. As a result, Bailey and Kalish become free agents. Boston tendered 2014 contracts to the other 26 unsigned players on its major league roster.

The announcements were made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington.

Bailey, 29, appeared in only 30 games with the Red Sox during the 2013 season due to two trips to the disabled list and season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on July 24. He went 3-1 with eight saves in 13 chances while posting a 3.77 ERA (12 ER/28.2 IP). In two seasons with Boston since being acquired from Oakland on December 28, 2011, he has gone 4-2 with 14 saves, a 4.91 ERA (24 ER/44.0 IP), 53 strikeouts and 20 walks in 49 games out of the bullpen. Selected by the A's in the sixth round of the 2006 June Draft, Bailey owns a career 11-12 record with 89 saves and a 2.64 ERA (64 ER/218.0 IP) in 206 major league appearances, all in relief.

Kalish, 25, missed the entire 2013 season due to injury. He began the year on the 60-day disabled list while recovering from right shoulder surgery and underwent cervical fusion surgery on August 13. Selected by the Red Sox in the ninth round of the 2006 June Draft, Kalish played in 89 major league games with Boston over the 2010 and 2012 seasons and combined to hit .243 (63-for-259) with 14 doubles, a triple, four home runs, 29 RBI, 38 runs, 18 walks, and 13 stolen bases.

With the moves, Boston's 40-man roster is now at 38.
