Red Sox Option Shortstop Stephen Drew to Single-A Greenville
Right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket
BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today optioned shortstop Stephen Drew to Single-A Greenville. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Wilson will be active for tonight's 7:10 p.m. game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

Drew, 31, was signed by the Red Sox on Wednesday to a one-year contract through the 2014 season. The left-handed batter helped the Red Sox to the 2013 World Series Championship, appearing in 124 regular season games, all at shortstop, and hitting .253 (112-for-442) with 29 doubles, eight triples, 13 home runs, 67 RBI, 57 runs scored, and 54 walks. His 67 RBI tied a single-season career high (also 2008) and ranked second among American League shortstops, and he also ranked among AL leaders at the position in walks (T-2nd) and home runs (T-3rd). Selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in first round of the 2004 June Draft, he has a .264 average, 210 doubles, 60 triples, 90 home runs, 416 RBI, 471 runs scored, 347 walks, and 40 stolen bases in 936 career major league games.
Wilson, 28, returns to the Red Sox for his second major league stint of the 2014 season. He was also with the club for one day on April 23 but did not appear in the game. With Pawtucket this year, he has gone 1-0 with five saves and a 1.42 ERA (3 ER/19.0 IP), allowing 12 walks with 21 strikeouts and a .182 opponent batting average in 18 appearances. With the PawSox this season, the right-hander has recorded at least one strikeout in 15 of his outings and has held opponents scoreless 16 times. Last year, he made his major league debut with 26 games over three stints with the Red Sox, going 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA and 22 strikeouts compared to 14 walks. He did not surrender a home run in 27.2 innings with the big league club.
