Red Sox power up behind Wright to down O's

May 30th, 2016

BALTIMORE -- Boston homered three times, including Marco Hernandez's first career Major League homer, to back a complete-game effort from knuckler Steven Wright in Monday's 7-2 series-opening win over the Orioles at Camden Yards.
Hernandez went deep on Orioles reliever Mychal Givens, belting an 0-1 pitch for a three-run homer to give Boston some insurance in the top of the eighth. David Ortiz hit a solo homer earlier in the frame and Jackie Bradley Jr.'s leadoff sixth-inning homer gave the Red Sox a lead they would never relinquish. Red-hot shortstop Xander Bogaerts also extended his career-long hitting streak to 23 games.

The victory puts Boston two games ahead of Baltimore in the American League East standings.
"I told you before the game, he has the [fifth]-best ERA in the American League. And if you put the National League in it, it would probably be higher than that in all of baseball," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Wright. "It's quite a weapon for a team to have, a guy who you can run out there on three-four days' rest. It doesn't matter. And throw 120-whatever [pitches] and don't worry about it and pitch in extra-inning games. He's been solid for them."
Orioles starter Tyler Wilson went 6 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs. Wright pitched his third complete game of the season -- which is tied for the most in the Majors -- and lowered his ERA to 2.45 as he continues to roll.
"To go nine innings against that lineup in this ballpark, an outstanding job," Red Sox manager John Farrell said of Wright. "He was able to neutralize the top half of that lineup extremely well. … A good day for us, a big day for Steven."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Can only hope to contain him: Bogaerts pushed his streak to 23 games with an RBI double to left in the third inning after Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia reached on singles. Bogaerts ripped a pitch from Wilson inside the third-base bag and down the left-field line, scoring Betts for a 2-0 lead and continuing the longest active hitting streak in the Majors.
"Ortiz kind of told me I was going to hit a curveball hard," Bogaerts said. "I was like, 'Nah, no chance.' [Wilson] threw a curveball and I just tried to put a good swing on it and see what happens." More >

Inflicting pain: One day after sitting out with a sore left foot, Red Sox designated hitter Ortiz drilled a solo home run in the eighth off Orioles reliever Ashur Tolliver. The homer, his third in as many games played and 14th overall, boosted Boston's lead to 4-2 and sparked a four-run inning capped by Hernandez's three-run blast off Givens. More >

Joseph takes a hit: Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph, who was hit by a foul ball in the groin, went to get checked out at a local hospital following Monday's game. Joseph, who played all nine innings, snapped an 0-for-19 streak with his fifth-inning single.
The Orioles, who had just one single through the first four innings, got things going and created two runs in the fifth. All four of Baltimore's hits came by the 6-through-9 batters, with Nolan Reimold tripling and scoring and Ryan Flaherty driving in a run. More >

Wilson still quality: The O's righty wasn't at his best, but still got into the seventh inning on Monday. He struck out four and walked two in the 104-pitch outing.
"Against a lineup like that, and at this level in general, the game comes down to just a pitch or two," Wilson said. "We have talked about that before, about [how] these guys don't let mistakes go by and especially a lineup like that with the guys that they have. That's the way it goes. I think it's a tip of the cap to Wright and the way he threw the ball tonight and the way those guys came out and attacked in their lineup offensively."
QUOTABLE
"It was a challenge. He had great stuff today. It never ended up where it started. You can't really predict where to swing. You just hope that you get one that maybe doesn't move quite as much. If you do, hey, hang with them."
-- Orioles designated hitter Mark Trumbo, on Wright
"It's my fifth year doing it now. …That's one thing we've really concentrated on, trying to stay with that delivery because it's all about staying relaxed and repeating that delivery."
-- Wright, on rebounding with his knuckleball after allowing two runs and three hits in the fifth

REPLAY REVIEW
The Orioles won a pair of challenges, the first in the third inning on a close play at first that was initially ruled an infield hit for Hernandez before being overturned. That gave them a second challenge, which they took advantage of in the seventh inning, getting Bogaerts on a stolen-base attempt after replay review. The review took 67 seconds.
