Red Sox recall left-handed pitcher Edwin Escobar from Triple-A Pawtucket

Option right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree to Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today recalled left-handed pitcher Edwin Escobar from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree was optioned to Pawtucket. Escobar (wearing No. 71) will be active for tonight's series finale in Toronto against the Blue Jays beginning at 7:07 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager made the announcement.

Escobar, 22, begins his second stint in the majors with the Red Sox this season. He did not appear in a game over his first stint, August 10-11. Along with Hembree, Escobar was acquired by Boston from the San Francisco Giants on July 26 in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy and cash considerations. Since his acquisition, Escobar has made five starts for Pawtucket and is 0-2 with a 4.28 ERA (13 ER/27.1 IP) and 20 strikeouts. He has pitched six or more innings and allowed two runs or fewer in four of his five outings. Between both Pawtucket and Triple-A Fresno in the Giants system, the Venezuelan native is 3-10 with a 4.94 ERA (76 ER/138.1 IP) with 116 strikeouts in 25 starts in 2014. He entered this season as the No. 2 overall prospect in the Giants minor league system as rated by Baseball America

Hembree, 25, finished last night's game in Toronto, allowing three runs in one inning of work. It was his third career appearance with the Red Sox, and the first in his 12 career major league games in which he had allowed a run. He will return to Pawtucket where he has appeared in four games, going 0-1 with one save and a 4.15 ERA (2 ER/4.1 IP). Between Fresno and the PawSox this season, Hembree is 1-4, with 19 saves, a 3.92 ERA (19 ER/43.2 IP), 18 walks, and 52 strikeouts in 46 games. A 2014 Pacific Coast League mid-season All-Star, Hembree entered this season as the No. 7 overall prospect in the Giants organization according to Baseball America.
