Victorino named AL Player of the Week
Slugger played important part in Red Sox's late-inning rally vs. Mariners
Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino was named American League Player of the Week after hitting .400 last week to help the Red Sox stay in first place in the contentious American League East.
The Boston right fielder went 12-for-30 with three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and seven runs scored over seven games. The Red Sox went 5-2 over that span to maintain a one-game lead over the Rays in the division.
It was Victorino's first career weekly award and Boston's third this season. (Mike Napoli and Andrew Bailey shared it for the week ending April 21.)
Victorino finished first in total bases (21) among AL leaders last week, and he was tied for first in doubles and second in hits and runs scored.
Victorino recorded three hits -- including two doubles -- and three runs in the Red Sox's 8-2 win against the Mariners on Tuesday. He had two more hits Wednesday as well as Thursday, when Boston mounted its largest late-game comeback in more than 70 years with an 8-7 walk-off win against Seattle.
Victorino hit a solo homer in the eighth inning of that game, cutting Seattle's lead to 7-2, before lining a two-run single as part of a six-run ninth inning. He also went 2-for-3 on Saturday against the D-backs.
