Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Placed right-handed pitcher John Schreiber on the 15-day Injured List with a right teres major strain.
  • Optioned left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Seattle Mariners.
  • Recalled right-handed pitcher Justin Garza from Worcester. He will wear number 63.
  • Selected left-handed pitcher Ryan Sherriff to the active Major League roster from Worcester. He will wear number 71.

The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 40.

Schreiber, 29, entered in the seventh inning of last night’s game against the Mariners and struck out his only batter faced before exiting due to an injury. The right-hander has posted a 2.12 ERA (4 ER/17.0 IP) with 21 strikeouts in 18 appearances this season. He has not allowed a run in his last six games, beginning April 29. Claimed off waivers by Boston from the Detroit Tigers on February 18, 2021, Schreiber owns a 3.25 ERA (41 ER/113.2 IP) in 111 career outings with the Tigers (2019-20) and Red Sox (2021-23).

Bernardino, 31, was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox from the Mariners on April 12. The left-hander has posted a 3.65 ERA (5 ER/12.1 IP) in 11 appearances for Boston, most recently allowing one run over 1.1 innings in last night’s game against Seattle. He has recorded a 3.68 ERA (6 ER/14.2 IP) in 13 career appearances with the Mariners (2022) and Red Sox (2023).

Garza, 29, was claimed off waivers by Boston from the Los Angeles Angels on April 28. The right-hander owns a 3.95 ERA (6 ER/13.2 IP) in 10 Triple-A outings this season with Salt Lake and Worcester. Selected by Cleveland in the eighth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Cal State Fullerton, he appeared in 21 Major League games with Cleveland in 2021 and posted a 4.71 ERA (15 ER/28.2 IP) with 29 strikeouts, his only Major League experience.

Sherriff, 32, was signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on January 21 with an invite to Major League Spring Training and did not allow an earned run in 6.2 innings over seven Grapefruit League outings. The left-hander began the season with Worcester and posted a 3.00 ERA (5 ER/15.0 IP) in 15 appearances. In 44 career Major League games with the St. Louis Cardinals (2017-18) and Tampa Bay Rays (2020-21), Sherriff owns a 3.65 ERA (18 ER/44.1 IP).
