Club Options Infielder Jeter Downs to Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today reinstated infielder/outfielder Christian Arroyo from the 10-Day Injured List. To make room for Arroyo on the active roster, the club optioned infielder Jeter Downs to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Arroyo, 27, was placed on the 10-Day Injured List on July 9 with a left groin strain. The right-handed hitter played in each of Double-A Portland’s last two games during his rehab assignment, including one start at second base, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, two walks, and one stolen base. Arroyo has played in 42 games for Boston this season, batting .224 (26-for-116) with 13 RBI while playing in 17 games in right field, 11 at shortstop, seven at second base, four at third base, and two at first base.

Downs, 24, has played in 14 games across two stints for Boston this season, his Major League debut, making seven starts at second base and three at third base while batting .154 (6-for-39) with one home run and four RBI. The right-handed hitter has also played in 67 games for Worcester, batting .217 (51-for-235) with an .811 OPS, 16 home runs, and 32 RBI.
