November 4th, 2019

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

• Second baseman Dustin Pedroia and left-handed pitcher Chris Sale were reinstated from the 60-day injured list.

•Catcher Juan Centeno was outrighted from the major league roster. He has elected free agency.

The Red Sox’ 40-man roster is now at 34.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Pedroia, 36, began the 2019 season on the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation. He appeared in three rehab games with Single-A Greenville before being reinstated on April 9, making two starts with Boston at second base and two as a designated hitter. Pedroia returned to the 10-day injured list on April 19 (retroactive to April 18) with left knee irritation and played in 11 rehab games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket in May. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list on May 27 and missed the remainder of the season.

Sale, 30, went 6-11 with a 4.40 ERA (72 ER/147.1 IP) in 25 starts for the Red Sox in 2019. He was placed on the 10-day injured list with left elbow inflammation on August 17 (retro to August 14) and transferred to the 60-day injured list on September 1. In 2019, Sale recorded his seventh consecutive season with at least 200 strikeouts, joining Max Scherzer as the only major leaguers to reach the mark in each season from 2013-19. Last season, Sale set major league records for fewest innings needed to reach 2,000 career strikeouts (1,626.0) and most strikeouts through 1,500.0 career innings (1,803).

Centeno, 29, played in seven games for Boston in 2019 after being selected to the major league roster on September 1, making three starts at catcher and batting .133 (2-for-15). He spent most of the season with Triple-A Pawtucket after signing with the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in November 2018, starting 80 games with the PawSox and throwing out 24 of 74 runners attempting to steal (32.4%). Selected by the New York Mets in the 32nd round of the 2007 June Draft, Centeno has hit .223 (76-for-341) in 118 career games with the Mets (2013-14), Brewers (2015), Twins (2016), Astros (2017), Rangers (2018), and Red Sox (2019).
