October 3rd, 2021

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today reinstated right-handed pitcher Garrett Whitlock from the 10-day Injured List. To make room on the active major league roster, the Red Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Eduard Bazardo to the Triple-A Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Whitlock, 25, was placed on the injured list on September 21 (retroactive to September 20) with a right pectoral strain. In his first major league season, the right-hander has gone 8-4 with a 1.99 ERA (16 ER/72.1 IP), a 1.12 WHIP, 79 strikeouts, and 17 walks in 45 appearances. Acquired by the Red Sox in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft, the right-hander ranks first among major league rookies in ERA (min. 70.0 IP), and second in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.65).

Bazardo, 26, did not appear in a game in his most recent big league stint. The Venezuelan native did not allow a run in 3.0 innings over his two relief appearances with Boston this season, the first outings of his major league career. Having missed most of the season with a right lat strain, he pitched in only 11 games with Worcester, allowing 11 earned runs in 11.1 innings.
