Bill Schmidt honored with Legends in Scouting Award

Schmidt honored as part of the 16th annual Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation Awards Dinner

Vice President of Scouting Bill Schmidt was honored with the Legends in Scouting Award this past Saturday at the 16th annual Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation "In the Spirit of the Game" ceremony. Schmidt was one of six scouts to receive the award, which honors scouts who exemplify a love for the game and a passion for scouting.

Schmidt began his direction of the Rockies scouting department on Oct. 1, 1999 and was named the vice president of scouting on Jan. 2, 2007. He joined the Rockies from the Cleveland Indians, where he served four seasons as the national crosschecker. Prior to the Indians, Schmidt scouted for the New York Yankees (1988-95), the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau (1987-88) and the Cincinnati Reds (1982-84). All told, Schmidt has over 35 years of scouting experience.

Schmidt is the third Rockies scout to be honored with the Legends in Scouting Award, joining Jack Gillis in 2017 and Pat Daugherty in 2011.

The Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation, launched by Chicago White Sox executive and former player agent Dennis Gilbert, was established to help baseball scouts who have fallen on hard times due to job loss, illness, retirement or other setbacks. It relies solely on donations, contributions and the success of the annual awards dinner and memorabilia auction.
