DENVER -- Left-handed reliever Boone Logan threw his first bullpen session Thursday since landing on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 18 with left shoulder inflammation and is on track to rejoin the team around the start of the Rockies' series against the Dodgers on Monday.
Logan said he threw about 20 pitches, mixing both his fastball and his slider throughout the session.
"The bullpen [session] went good," Logan said. "Everything feels 10 times better. I feel strong, and I've got a rehab game Saturday [for Triple-A Albuquerque]. Hopefully that's the only one I'll have, and I'll meet up with the team in LA."
Rockies manager Walt Weiss didn't see the bullpen session, but he had heard earlier that Logan is feeling much better. He said the coaching staff will play it by ear whether or not Logan will need a second rehab appearance.
Logan has been excellent over 14 innings this season, holding a 1.93 ERA with 17 strikeouts, five walks and no home runs allowed. He struggled through his first two seasons in Colorado, however, holding a 5.37 ERA over 60 1/3 innings.
Logan's return as a left-handed specialist could be crucial, as Weiss has turned to right-hander Gonzalez Germen in those situation. Although not ideal, Germen has found success against left-handers over eight innings, holding them to a .179 batting average, in part thanks to an effective changeup.
"There's still been a void there, because [left-hander Jorge] De La [Rosa] isn't filling the same role," Weiss said. "He's giving us length out of the bullpen, but we don't have that matchup lefty. We do have [Jake] McGee, but McGee's our closer. He's pitching the ninth inning."
Worth noting
• Right-handed reliever Christian Bergman threw 20 pitches off flat ground Thursday at about 75 percent effort. Bergman, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 20 with a left oblique strain, said he felt a dull ache but no sharp pain, which was key. He expects to throw again on flat ground before throwing a bullpen session, although Weiss said his return is still far away.
• Catcher Nick Hundley's rehab assignment was delayed by a day because of a rainout at Triple-A Albuquerque. He was expected to catch one game of Thursday's doubleheader and serve as the designated hitter in the other game. Hundley will also be joined in Albuquerque by shortstop Jose Reyes, who began his rehab assignment Thursday.
