Tulo to start rehab assignment Wednesday

DEN View Full Game Coverage VER -- Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will begin an injury rehab assignment Wednesday at Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Tulowitzki, who hasn't played since May 30 because of a left groin strain, took early batting practice and fielded ground balls off the bat on Tuesday before the Rockies' game against the Athletics. The Sky Sox announced on Tuesday that Tulowitzki would be there Wednesday.

Tulowitzki, who is hitting .287 with eight home runs and 27 RBIs over 47 games, played through the groin pain since the first series of the year. Going into Tuesday, the Rockies were 4-6 without Tulowitzki, including losses in five straight games.

Tulowitzki is eligible to return Friday for the opener of a three-game series against the Tigers at Comerica Park, but manager Jim Tracy was uncertain whether that would happen.

"I just know that he's progressing and he's progressing very nicely," Tracy said.

Tulowitzki holds a slight lead over the Cardinals' Rafael Furcal in the National League voting for the 83rd All-Star Game next month in Kansas City.
