Fowler scratched with sore right ankle

DENVER -- Rockies center fielder Dexter Fowler wore heavy tape on his right ankle and a smile on his face Friday afternoon, but there was less reason for happiness after batting practice.

Manager Jim Tracy had put Fowler in the starting lineup for the game against the Padres, but was scratched after warm-ups.

The switch-hitting Fowler (.306, 12 HR, 45 RBIs) told Tracy on Wednesday, before the team had Thursday off, "I'm going to play, no matter what. I'm tired of sitting down."

But Fowler would have been compromised. He said he wasn't going to be as aggressive as usual on the bases, and Tracy has wanted to make sure Fowler could make defensive plays in center field. Also, the right leg is the back leg when he bats right-handed. Fowler admitted he has not swung right-handed in five days.

Tyler Colvin started in center on Friday in Fowler's place, but Fowler entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and delivered a single. He has not started, but is 2-for-5 with an RBI in reserve duty since suffering the injury on Aug. 22.
