Snow postpones Braves-Rockies at Coors

Monday's game to be made up as part of Tuesday doubleheader

Special to

DENVER -- For the third time this homestand, the Rockies have had to make alternative plans. Monday's game against the Braves was postponed because of inclement weather. The Rockies and Braves will play a doubleheader on Tuesday, at 1:10 and 6:40 p.m. MT.

Snow and rain began falling Monday morning, and the teams decided in the afternoon to push back the first of three games between the two teams with the Majors' best records (13-5).

The twinbill figures to be a cold one. Tuesday's high is forecast for 36 degrees. Last week, two days of games against the Mets were postponed because of snow. Gametime temperatures of the doubleheader on Tuesday were 38 and 36, and the temperature at the start of Thursday afternoon's game was 28. When Monday's game was postponed, Denver was dealing with temperatures in the upper 20s.

Officially, Monday was the 16th time a game in Denver has been postponed by snow in the Rockies' 21 seasons.

The snowouts have provided relief during what was to be a busy stretch of the schedule, with 20 games scheduled for 20 consecutive days. The Rockies have 11 games in 10 days before their next scheduled day off, May 2.

The Rockies had an eight-game win streak snapped Sunday with a 5-4 loss to the D-backs. The Braves, winners of 10 straight earlier in the season, have lost four of their last five.

The pitching matchup for the first game is the same as what would have been Monday, with Rockies lefty Jeff Francis (1-1, 8.25 ERA) facing Braves lefty Mike Minor , and the Rockies going with righty Jon Garland (2-0, 3.32) in the second game against righty Julio Teheran (0-0, 7.31).

In another development, the Rockies haven't made an official announcement on the identity of the starter who will replace righty Jhoulys Chacin (back stiffness) on Wednesday. However, Triple-A Colorado Springs has scratched right-hander Tyler Chatwood from his scheduled start Monday night against Las Vegas, which could put him in play to start for the Rockies at some point during the series with the Braves.

Lefty Drew Pomeranz also is an option. He is scheduled to start for Colorado Springs on Tuesday, but the weather is expected to be awful, so he may be available to the big club. Chatwood is 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA and 17 strikeouts against four walks in his three starts. Pomeranz is 2-0 with a 3.31 ERA in three starts, with 21 strikeouts against five walks.

The Rockies will be closely watching the health of first baseman Todd Helton, who has missed two straight games and received an anti-inflammatory shot because of a left forearm strain. Helton was not planning to play Monday, and if he doesn't feel better Tuesday, the 15-day disabled list is a possibility.

Tuesday will be a split doubleheader, meaning separate tickets will be required for each game.

For the first game, parking lots open at 11 a.m. and gates open at 11:30. Tickets marked April 22, 2013, are valid for the first game only. Exchanges may be made for any game for the rest of the season, value-for-value, best-available seating. Exchanges must be made before May 22, 2013.

Complimentary tickets have a value of zero dollars and may not be exchanged. Discounted tickets may be exchanged only for the amount paid to the Rockies and are subject to any constraints applicable to the original sale.
