CarGo remains in treatment for 'mild' hand injury

DENVER -- Rockies right fielder Carlos Gonzalez stayed in treatment for his left-hand sprain and didn't participate in baseball activities before Tuesday night's game against the D-backs. Although Gonzalez has a history of wrist/hand/finger injuries that have curtailed his production, the team insists this injury is "mild" and not related to those more troublesome injuries.

Gonzalez suffered the sprain in the carpometacarpal joint -- the area where the fingers meet the wrist. The injury is located at the base of the ring finger. Manager Walt Weiss said he doesn't believe the injury is major, but he plans to be careful with Gonzalez

"It's going to be a day-to-day deal -- one or two days. With the hand it's always a little concerning, but we feel like it's not too serious," Weiss said. "This one's different. It's in a different area. I don't think it's anything that's chronic."

Last year, doctors removed a benign tumor from this right index finger, but that was in a different part of the hand. Gonzalez also sprained the right middle finger in 2013.

But the current injury, suffered on a swing, is more similar to an incident in late 2010 -- the year he won the National League batting title -- when a foul ball left him with a sprain in the thumb-wrist area.

"He has had some thumb/hand/wrist injuries in the past, so there are some similarities there, but it's not the same injury," Weiss said.

Gonzalez has hit safely in 21 of his 27 games since May 22, but five games into an eight-game homestand he is 3-for-17. Two of the hits, however, have been home runs.

• The Rockies conducted a moment of silence Tuesday in honor of Darryl Hamilton, a former outfielder who played for Colorado in 1998 and '99. Hamilton was killed in a domestic murder-suicide over the weekend in suburban Houston. He worked for MLB Advanced Media, the Commissioner's Office and MLB Network after retirement.

"He was always smiling," said Weiss, who was never teammates with Hamilton but grew to respect him from the opposing dugout. "We called him 'Hambone.' Anytime we played against him, he came over and said hello. He was always a happy guy. He always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. He was a fun guy to be around."

• Right-handed reliever Rafael Betancourt, currently on the disabled list because he needed time to recover from dizziness and fatigue brought on by a severe sinus infection, will throw a side session Wednesday and could be activated after that. Betancourt gave up two runs in 1 1/3 innings in a rehab game for Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, and Weiss said that might be all Betancourt needs to be ready to rejoin the club.

• Double-A New Britain right-handed pitcher Matt Flemer was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for June 15-21, after throwing 8 2/3 scoreless innings in a 2-0 shutout of Bowie. Flemer, a 27th-round pick out of California in 2012, is 2-3 with a 3.56 ERA in 13 starts this season.

• The Rockies and ninth-round Draft pick Trey Killian, a right-handed pitcher from Arkansas, agreed to bonus terms, worth $150,000, according to MLB.com's Draft and Signing Bonus Tracker. Killian, a junior who was the Razorbacks' Friday night starter, went 3-5 with a 4.76 ERA with 62 strikeouts and 24 walks. He worked at least six innings in nine of his 15 starts and gave up one or fewer earned run six times.
