Former closer Boggs non-tendered by Rockies

DENVER -- The Rockies non-tendered right-handed relief pitcher Mitchell Boggs on Monday, making the onetime closer a free agent.

Boggs, 29, who went a combined 0-3 with a 8.10 ERA with the Cardinals and the Rockies and spent time in Triple-A in 2013, was the only arbitration-eligible player the Rockies decided to non-tender. The club offered 2014 contracts to infielder Jonathan Herrera, right-handed reliever Wilton Lopez and left-handed reliever Josh Outman.

The Rockies acquired Boggs from the Cardinals for cash on July 9, after Boggs had struggled mightily with the Cards -- 0-3, 11.05 ERA in 18 games, which included a 2-for-5 performance in save opportunities. At the time of the deal, Boggs was pitching at Triple-A Memphis. He also saw time at Colorado Springs with the Rockies.

Herrera has held down the utility infielder job since 2010. Last season, he posted career highs in batting average (.292) and slugging percentage (.364).

Lopez, who joined the Rockies last winter in a trade with the Astros, went 3-4 with a 4.06 ERA in a team-leading 75 appearances in 2013.

Outman was 3-0 with a 4.33 ERA in a career-high 61 relief appearances.

The decision left the Rockies with 37 players on their Major League roster, three short of the limit.
