LHP Edwar Cabrera recalled from Double-A Tulsa

The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Edwar Cabrera from Double-A Tulsa. To make room on the active roster for Cabrera, the Rockies have optioned right-handed pitcher Zach Putnam to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Cabrera (#46) will start tonight’s Rockies vs. Nationals game at Coors Field (6:40 p.m. MDT).

Cabrera, 24, will be making his Major League debut with tonight’s start. The 6-foot left-hander has spent the 2012 season at Double-A Tulsa, going 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA (98.0 ip, 32 er), 23 walks and 82 strikeouts in 15 starts for the Drillers. A native of Bani, Dominican Republic, Cabrera was recently named as one of the pitchers for the World team at the 2012 All-Star Futures Game, one of two Rockies prospects selected to play in the game (also Nolan Arenado). Cabrera split his 2011 Minor League season between Single-A Asheville and High-A Modesto, and combined to go 8-3 with a 3.34 ERA (167.0 ip, 62 er), 41 walks and 217 strikeouts. Cabrera’s 217 strikeouts led all of Minor League Baseball and set the Rockies all-time organizational record. Cabrera was originally signed by Colorado as a non-drafted free agent on March 5, 2008.

Putnam, 24, is coming off his second stint with the Big League club this season. In two Major League appearances this season, Putnam has tossed 2.0 scoreless innings. He has spent the remainder of the 2012 season at Triple-A Colorado Springs as the team’s closer. In 25 relief appearances for the Sky Sox, Putnam has gone 1-2 with 11 saves, a 4.94 ERA (27.1 ip, 15 er), 11 walks and 37 strikeouts. The Rochester, Michigan native has appeared in 10 career Major League games in 2011 (with Indians) and this season, and owns a 4.82 ERA (9.1 ip, 5 er) in the 10 games. He was acquired by Colorado from Cleveland in exchange for Kevin Slowey on January 20, 2012.

The Rockies currently have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
