DENVER -- Nolan Arenado showed one reason why he made his fourth consecutive All-Star roster -- and second straight start -- on Tuesday night in the Rockies' 5-3 loss to the D-backs.
With an opposite-field shot to right-center in the seventh inning, Arenado jumped back into a tie with the Brewers' Jesus Aguilar for the National League home run lead. Arenado's 412-foot homer off of D-backs reliever Archie Bradley was his 23rd of the season.
"That's the type of player he is," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "He's capable of doing those things. He's a very good player. And with that home run, it got us to 5-3."
Arenado cut the Rockies' deficit after the Rockies' bullpen surrendered four runs in the top of the seventh inning. But despite his fireworks, the score would stay put.
The Rockies needed a spark after the D-backs took the lead late in the game, and Arenado started it -- Trevor Story and Ian Desmond knocked back-to-back singles behind him to put runners in scoring position. But the Rockies couldn't see the spark through; Colorado left 12 on base and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
"[The D-backs'] bullpen pitched well against us," Black said. "We nicked Bradley for a homer, stressed him a little bit. Stressed [Brad] Boxberger in the end, but we just couldn't get the big hit."
