SAN FRANCISCO -- The Colorado Rockies did some shuffling to their roster before Monday's series opener against the Giants, sending outfielder Carlos Gonzalez (strained right shoulder) and southpaw Tyler Anderson (left knee inflammation) to the 10-day disabled list, while reinstating Chad Qualls (lower back spasms) from the DL and promoting fellow right-handed reliever Jairo Diaz from Triple-A Albuquerque.
"Our starters have been going a little bit short here the last five starts," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "We just needed reinforcements in our bullpen. These two moves gave us some aid in that."
Gonzalez injured his shoulder during Wednesday's contest against Arizona. He played through the first eight innings of Thursday's series finale vs. the D-backs, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, but has been out of action since.
The 31-year-old owns a .221/.300/.348 slash line with six homers and 20 RBIs this season. Gonzalez said he will not swing a bat for the next few days as he tries to regain strength in his shoulder. Black said he's hopeful Gonzalez can return by July 3, the first day he's eligible to rejoin the team.
"I tried to play through and it didn't feel too good," Gonzalez said. "I couldn't extend my swing. I was just barely trying, hoping for contact. That's not my game. I've got to be healthy. I've got to be out there trying to swing the bat."
Anderson was removed in the third inning of Sunday's contest against the Dodgers, in his first start since returning from a three-week stint on the DL -- also with left knee inflammation. In 13 games (12 starts) with the Rockies this year, the 27-year-old is 3-5 with a 6.11 ERA.
With the addition of Qualls and Diaz to the bullpen, Black now only has three bench players.
"It's going to be a challenge," Black said. "We'll manage the game how we need to manage it."
Qualls, a 14-year veteran, hasn't pitched for the Rockies since June 15. He has a 4.60 ERA in 17 appearances for Colorado this season.
Diaz, 26, returns to the big leagues after missing the 2016 season due to Tommy John surgery recovery. The fireballer said he's happy with his velocity, but that he wants to improve his slider and curveball. Diaz posted a 3.52 ERA in eight outings with Albuquerque, striking out nine while walking two in 7 2/3 innings.
"I feel pretty good," Diaz said. "I'm very excited for the opportunity I'm getting. I'm going to do my work. I'm going to do the best that I can to help the team."
Worth noting
• About an hour before Monday's first pitch, the Rockies announced they had acquired lefty Zachary Rosscup from the Chicago Cubs for righty Matt Carasiti. Rosscup, 29, has one appearance for the Cubs but has a 2.60 ERA in 17 Triple-A contests this year. The 25-year-old Carasiti has a 2.37 ERA in 27 outings with Albuquerque.
