Fowler racking up impressive stats early

SAN FRANCISCO -- Colorado Rockies center fielder Dexter Fowler has been keeping statisticians busy during his red-hot start to the 2013 season.

Fowler on Sunday against San Diego became the first player in Rockies franchise history to have at least one hit and score one run in each of his first six games in a season. He entered Monday night's game against the San Francisco Giants tied for third on Colorado's all-time list for consecutive games with at least one run scored to start a season.

Dante Bichette, now the Rockies' hitting coach, owns that record with eight.

"I guess these are all blessings," Fowler said before the game. "Good thing is they're good stats, not bad."

Almost all of Fowler's stats have been good over his first six games. Fowler entered Monday night's game hitting .370 with four home runs, seven runs scored and five RBIs. He had a slugging percentage of .852 and an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of 1.266.

"I just tried to pick up where I left off last year," Fowler said. "I was blessed to be able to play all the season and not have that bad of injuries. So I can just build on the success that I had. I just want to go out and have fun. That's the key thing. When I start thinking too much and I start thinking about everything else, that's when God humbles you."

Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he believes Fowler "is going to play in some All-Star Games" someday.

"Dexter's just a great athlete," Weiss said. "He has surprised me with his power. I knew he had power, but he's got more power than I thought he had, not just due to the fact he's got four home runs already, but when you watch him take BP, he hits the ball a long way. He's a dynamic athlete."
