Rockies place RHP Jhoulys Chacin on bereavement list, C Yorvit Torrealba on 7-day disabled list

Rockies recall INF/C Jordan Pacheco, INF/OF Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A

DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has placed right-handed pitcher Jhoulys Chacin on the bereavement list and catcher Yorvit Torrealba on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion. To take those two spots on the active roster, Colorado has recalled infielder/catcher Jordan Pacheco and infielder/outfielder Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Both Pacheco (#15) and Wheeler (#4) will be active for tonight's game at Philadelphia (5:05 p.m. MDT).

Chacin, 25, is 11-7 with a 3.24 ERA (155.1 ip, 56 er), 42 walks and 95 strikeouts in 24 starts this season for the Rockies. Since June 11th, Chacin has gone 8-4 with a 2.23 ERA (88.2 ip, 22 er) in 13 starts for the Rockies. This is the right-hander's fifth season in the Majors, all with Colorado, and he has gone 34-38 with a 3.56 ERA (566.2ip, 224 er), 233 walks and 441 strikeouts in 106 games/91 starts. His 3.56 career ERA is the lowest in franchise history for a starting pitcher (minimum 50 starts). Chacin was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Venezuela on September 27, 2004.

Torrealba, 35, has batted .252 (36-for-143) with 6 doubles, 10 RBI and 9 runs scored in 51 games this season for the Rockies. 2013 marks Torrealba's 13th Major League campaign, his 5th with Colorado (2006-09, 2013). The Venezuela native has also spent time with San Francisco (2001-05), Seattle (2005), San Diego (2010), Texas (2011-12), Toronto (2012) and Milwaukee (2012). In 897 career Major League games, Torrealba has batted .257 (739-for-2839) with 160 doubles, 12 triples, 56 home runs and 333 RBI. Torrealba was signed to a Minor League contract by Colorado on January 24, 2013 and was a member of the Rockies Opening Day roster. 

Pacheco, 27, began the season with Colorado before being optioned to Triple-A Colorado Spring on July 29th. In 69 games for the Rockies he has batted .229 (43-for-188) with 10 doubles, 1 home run, 17 RBI and 19 runs. He has seen game action at catcher (2 games), left field (1 game) and first base (40 games/37 starts). Pacheco is a career .286 (214-for-747) Major League hitter with 43 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, 85 RBI and 75 runs in 222 games. Pacheco was originally drafted by Colorado in the 9th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of New Mexico.

Wheeler, 25, will be joining the Major League club for the second time in 2013, as he was a member of the Rockies active roster April 25-May 5. In six games he hit .111 (1-for-9) with a double. Wheeler has spent the remainder of the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he was a member of the Pacific Coast League All-Star team. In 110 games for the Sky Sox he has hit .308 (128-for-415) with 29 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs, 81 RBI and 72 runs. Wheeler has spent time in the Majors in each of the last two seasons, as he saw playing time in 50 games for Arizona in 2012. In 56 career games in the Majors he has batted .229 (27-for-118) with 7 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 10 RBI. Wheeler was acquired by the Rockies from Arizona on November 20, 2012 in exchange for LHP Matt Reynolds.
