Rockies proud of charitable efforts in 2018

DENVER -- As baseball turns to the quietude of winter, the giving season draws near, and for the Rockies, that has been an around-the-calendar effort.

From the early days of Spring Training through the holidays, the club oversaw charitable efforts benefiting children, the elderly, military service members and countless more in need of assistance or inspiration. Below is a glimpse into some of the club's efforts to give back to the community in 2018.

Black, Rox host Children's Hospital Colorado patients in Scottsdale
In one of the most uplifting stories of the season, the Rockies hosted 27 patients from Children's Hospital Colorado's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at the club's complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., during Spring Training. Guests and their families attended a Saturday home game against the Brewers and had a meet-and-greet with players on Sunday morning.

Freeland returns to Holm
Denver native distributed backpacks during the first week of classes at Holm Elementary, where he is an alumnus. Despite being tucked within an affluent suburb, Holm is comprised of a large swath of students below the poverty line.

Arenado visits local children's hospital
Just after being selected to his fourth straight All-Star Game, third baseman spent an off-day at a Denver-area children's hospital to talk baseball and provide support for their families.
"If I can make them feel better for a couple of minutes or an hour, however long I'm there, it's well worth it," Arenado said at the time. "And it's seeing the parents. The parents need motivation, also. They need a little pick-me-up. I want to lift the parents up, also. Some people forget that parents are going through a hard time, too."

Rox host PLAY campaign at Coors
As part of MLB's PLAY (Promoting a Lifetime of Activity for Youth) campaign, reliever and others hosted children at Coors in May to promote healthy eating, injury prevention and strength and conditioning, and raise awareness to the illegal dangers of performance-enhancing drugs.

Black, players host clinic for Big Brothers, Big Sisters
In August, manager Bud Black, right-hander , first baseman and third-base coach Stu Cole hosted a clinic at Keli McGregor Field in conjunction with BBBS of Colorado, which the club has actively maintained a strong relationship with for years.

Castro, Cuevas, Musgrave visit Buckley Air Force Base
Infielder , outfielder and left-hander oversaw a youth clinic at Buckley for children of military members.

Dunn connects military families with baseball
Throughout the season, left-hander Mike Dunn invited military groups and their families to select home games on Mondays.

McMahon, Cuevas visit Boys & Girls Club
First baseman and Cuevas spent an afternoon with the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Denver, taking part in foosball, basketball and other activities with the children.

Freeland takes on field day
Freeland, a graduate of the Denver Public Schools system, gave back to the community in late May by taking part in field day at Castro Elementary.

Rockies Wives volunteer at food bank
Rockies Wives, who have raised over $100,000 in support of their charity endeavors through the years, spent an afternoon at Food Bank of the Rockies to help package and distribute food with the assistance of right-hander .

Front office makes impact with Freedom Service Dogs
As the team on the field was making its pennant chase in September, members of the front office spent time with the Denver chapter of Freedom Service Dogs, which strives to train canines into custom-trained, life-changing assistance dogs for people in need.
