Rockies recall RHP Edgmer Escalona

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Edgmer Escalona from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the 25-man roster, the Rockies have optioned right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Escalona (#61) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s Rockies vs. Padres game at Coors Field.

Escalona, 25, will be looking to make an appearance in the Major Leagues with Colorado for the third-consecutive season. In 19 career Major League games, the right-hander has no record with a 1.71 ERA (31.2 ip, 6 er), 11 walks and 16 strikeouts. Opponents have batted just .188 (21-for-112) against him. The Venezuela native began the 2012 season in Triple-A Colorado Springs as the Sky Sox closer. In four games and 5.0 innings pitched he had two saves and did not allow a run. In eight Minor League seasons, Escalona is 18-15 with 12 saves and a 3.67 ERA (345.1 ip, 141 er). Escalona owns an active 8.0-inning Major League scoreless streak from 9/9-24/11.

Chatwood, 22, was the youngest player on the Rockies Opening Day roster. The right-hander has made four relief appearances this season, going 1-0 with one save and a 5.63 ERA (8.0 ip, 5 er), one walk and 7 strikeouts. Chatwood was acquired by Colorado on 11/30/11 in exchange for catcher Chris Iannetta from the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In 31 Major League games/25 starts, Chatwood is 7-11 with a 4.80 ERA (150.0 ip, 80 er), 72 walks and 81 strikeouts. Chatwood has made just five career starts at the Triple-A level, all coming with Salt Lake City in 2010-11.

The Rockies have 39 players on their 40-man roster, including three players on the 15-day disabled list.
