Rockies recall RHP Tyler Chatwood

DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the 25-man roster, the Rockies optioned right-handed pitcher Rob Scahill. Chatwood (#32) will make his 2013 season debut and start this afternoon against Atlanta.

Chatwood, 23, has made three starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs this year going 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA (14.2 ip, 3 er) walking just four compared to 17 strikeouts. His ERA is tied for seventh-lowest in the Pacific Coast League. In 2012, Chatwood was the youngest member of the Rockies Opening Day roster and finished the season 5-6 with a 5.43 ERA (64.2 ip, 39 er) over 19 games, 12 of which were starts. In his career at the Major League level, he's made 46 appearances with 37 starts and has gone 11-17 with a 4.97 ERA (206.2 ip, 114 er) with 104 walks and 115 strikeouts. The Fontana, CA native was originally drafted by the Angels in the second round (74th overall) of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft and was acquired by Colorado on November 30, 2011 in a trade for C Chris Iannetta.

Scahill, 26, was recalled on April 21 and made one appearance with Colorado on April 23 against Atlanta in Game One of the doubleheader. He pitched three scoreless innings - the longest by a Rockies reliever this year - and allowed just one hit, no walks and struck out two. Scahill began the season with Triple-A Colorado Springs going 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA (12.2 ip, 6 er) and allowed 18 hits in five relief appearances with one save. Four of his five appearances had been 2.0 innings or longer. The Illinois native pitched in six games with Colorado last season with a 1.04 ERA (8.2 ip, 1 er) and not receiving a decision but finished three games. Scahill was an eighth round selection in the 2009 June Draft out of Bradley University.

The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
