Rockies select the contract of RHP Eddie Butler and add him to the 25-man roster

DENVER - The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Eddie Butler from Double-A Tulsa. A spot on the 25-man roster opened yesterday when LHP Boone Logan was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Butler (#31) is slated to start tonight's Rockies vs. Dodgers game at Coors Field (6:40 p.m. MDT).

Bulter, 23, will make his Major League debut tonight becoming the third Rockies pitcher to make his MLB debut this season. The other Rockies to make their debut this season are RHP Tommy Kahnle 4/3 at MIA and RHP Chris Martin 4/26 at LAD. Eddie has spent the 2014 season at Double-A Tulsa making 11 starts for the Drillers. He owns a 4-4 record with a 2.49 ERA (68.2 ip, 19 er) and 40 strikeouts to 19 walks. In his minor league career, he has pitched in 52 games (51 starts) with four teams. He is 20-10, posting a 2.05 ERA (286.0 ip, 65) with 238 strikeouts and 84 walks. He surrendered just 13 home runs in those games for a 0.4 HR/9 ip ratio.

The 6-foot-2, 180 pound Butler is ranked by MLB.com as the number 2 prospect in the Rockies organization and the number 33 prospect among all MLB teams. Baseball America tabbed him as the number 24 overall prospect entering the season and Baseball Prospectus had him at number 26 overall. Eddie was a member of the US Team at the 2013 Futures Game over All-Star Weekend in Kansas City. He threw a perfect sixth inning of relief with one strikeout. At 23 years and 85 days old, Butler becomes the youngest pitcher for the Rockies this season.

Originally from Chesapeake, Virginia, Butler was drafted after high school in the 35th round of the 2009 draft by the Texas Rangers. Instead, he decided to attend Radford University in Virginia and was drafted after his junior season by the Rockies in the supplemental 1st round (46th overall) of the 2012 draft. He becomes the second player from Radford University to reach the Major Leagues after RHP Phil Leftwich played parts of three seasons with the California Angels from 1993-1996.

The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
