KC outrights Verdugo, Moore; non-tenders Robinson

KANSAS CITY -- Pitcher Ryan Verdugo and catcher Adam Moore are staying in the Royals' organization, but outfielder Derrick Robinson is becoming a free agent.

They were the three unresolved cases of the seven players who were designated for assignment on Nov. 20, when the Royals set their 40-man roster.

Verdugo and Moore were assigned outright on Friday to Triple-A Omaha, where they played last season. Robinson cleared waivers and the Royals will not tender him a contract, so he'll become a free agent.

Moore could be in competition to be backup catcher to regular Salvador Perez along with Brett Hayes, who is on the Kansas City roster, and Manny Pina, also on the Omaha roster.

Picked up on waivers from Seattle on July 7, Moore batted .296 with three homers and 23 RBIs in 35 regular-season games with Omaha. Called up by the Royals in September, he hit a home run against Cleveland in his first at-bat. He got into four games with KC and went 2-for-11.

Verdugo, a left-hander, was a Pacific Coast League All-Star for Omaha and finished 12-4 with a 3.75 ERA in 27 games (24 starts). He made one start for KC on July 17, his Major League debut, but was knocked out in the second inning.

He was obtained from San Francisco in last winter's trade for outfielder Melky Cabrera.

Robinson had been in the Royals' organization since being drafted in 2006's fourth round. He showed great speed, including 69 stolen bases for Class A Wilmington in 2009, but was a light hitter who struck out a lot.

After the 2012 season with Omaha, he was one of nine players named to the 2012 Minor League Rawlings Gold Glove Award team. He was selected as the left fielder.

At the plate, Robinson had a .268 average, two homers and 28 RBIs for the Storm Chasers. He also had 23 steals, giving him a career total of 314 in seven Minor League seasons.

Of the other players designated for assignment on Nov. 20, pitcher Chris Volstad and catcher Brayan Pena elected free agency and pitcher Vin Mazzaro and first baseman Clint Robinson were traded to Pittsburgh.
