Witt among prospects invited to Royals camp

February 5th, 2021

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals will have 29 non-roster invites attend Spring Training this year, including top prospects Bobby Witt Jr., Asa Lacy and Daniel Lynch.

Witt, the club’s future at shortstop, is the No. 7 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline, with lefties Lynch and Lacy coming in at Nos. 29 and 30, respectively. All will have the opportunity to show their skillset to the big league coaching staff, but Lynch especially will get a chance to compete for the Major League rotation, and it’s not unreasonable to think the 24-year-old could make an impact this season in Kansas City if he has an impressive camp.

The team announced that 14 pitchers, three catchers, eight infielders and four outfielders are invited to big league camp. In total, the Royals will have 67 players descend on their Spring Training complex in Surprise, Ariz., with pitchers and catchers reporting Feb. 17 and the first full-squad workout on Feb. 22.

Kansas City’s camp will feature 12 of its Top 30 prospects based on MLB Pipeline’s 2020 rankings, including the top four:

Witt (No. 1), Lacy (No. 2), Lynch (No. 3), pitcher Jackson Kowar (No. 4), outfielder Kyle Isbel (No. 7), pitcher Jonathan Bowlan (No. 9), pitcher Austin Cox (No. 11), infielder Nick Pratto (No. 12), catcher MJ Melendez (No. 13), outfielder Suely Matias (No. 14), pitcher Alec Marsh (No. 25) and pitcher Jon Heasley (No. 26).

Here is the full list of non-roster invites:

Pitchers: Jonathan Bowlan, Austin Cox, Jon Heasley, Jake Kalish, Jackson Kowar, Asa Lacy, Daniel Lynch, Alec Marsh, Eric Skoglund, Jake Brentz, Gabe Speir, Wade Davis, Carlos Sanabria and Ervin Santana.

Catchers: Nick Dini, MJ Melendez and Freddy Fermin.

Infielders: Gabriel Cancel, Clay Dungan, Nick Pratto, Emmanuel Rivera, Bobby Witt, Jr., Jeison Guzmán, Erick Meija and Hanser Alberto.

Outfielders: Kyle Isbel, Anderson Miller, Bubba Starling and Seuly Matias.

Davis, Santana and Alberto all signed Minor League deals this offseason with the Royals, while Sanabria was claimed off waivers from the Astros at the end of October.

Royals sign pre-arbitration players

The Royals have agreed to terms with all but four of their pre-arbitration players for the 2021 season. These are players on the 40-man roster with less than three years of service time, and salaries are typically set around the Major League minimum -- pitchers Scott Barlow, Scott Blewett, Kris Bubic, Carlos Hernández, Richard Lovelady, Jake Newberry, Brady Singer, Josh Staumont, Daniel Tillo, Angel Zerpa and Tyler Zuber; catcher Sebastian Rivero; infielders Lucius Fox, Kelvin Gutierrez, Nicky Lopez, Ryan McBroom and Ryan O’Hearn; and outfielders Nick Heath, Khalil Lee and Edward Olivares.

Pitchers Ronald Bolaños and Kyle Zimmer, as well as catchers Cam Gallagher and Meibrys Viloria remain unsigned for 2021, and they can continue negotiations through the spring with the Royals.
