Royals add two with Minor League deals

The Kansas City Royals announced today that the club has signed two players to minor league contracts for the 2014 season. The club plans to announce Major League Spring Training invitations at a later date.

Infielder Jason Donald, 29, spent the 2013 season in the Cincinnati Reds' organization, playing 78 games for Louisville (AAA). He batted .219 with 15 doubles, two triples, two homers and 23 runs scored. He played portions of three seasons in the Major Leagues with the Cleveland Indians (2010-12), appearing in a career-high 88 games in 2010. He hit .318 in just 39 games in 2011, with six doubles, one triple and one home run. The right-handed hitting infielder is a career .257 hitter (142-for-552) with 27 doubles, five triples, seven homers and 43 RBI at the Major League level.

Outfielder Melky Mesa, 26, played in five games for the New York Yankees last season, going 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles and two runs scored. He also hit .261 in 84 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA) with 15 doubles, 13 homers and 39 RBI. He also added 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts. The right-handed hitting outfielder has spent his entire professional career in the Yankees' organization, appearing in eight games at the Major League level. His best season came in 2012, when he hit a combined .264 with 23 homers and 67 RBI between Trenton (AA) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
