GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Royals right-hander Jason Hammel's final Cactus League start on Wednesday against the Indians was one he'll quickly forget.
Hammel went four innings and gave up nine hits and six runs in the Royals' 12-8 win.

Hammel, slated to be the No. 3 starter this season, has been trying all camp to improve his two-seam fastball.
"Still working on that two-seamer," Hammel said. "Not good tonight. It was flat. I was casting it trying to get depth on it, and that's the last thing you want to do. You want to release it out front."

On the bright side, Hammel did walk only one batter and struck out seven.
"Just a mixed bag," Hammel said. "There were some good things, made some good sliders. But the bottom line is I've got to get better. That just doesn't cut it."
Hammel said he is lined up to pitch next in the Royals' game against Triple-A Omaha on Monday in Omaha.

Gaviglio traded
Right-hander Sam Gaviglio, designated for assignment to make room for Justin Grimm, was traded to Toronto for cash considerations.
Gaviglio was claimed off waivers from the Mariners last season.
Camp battles
• First baseman Frank Schwindel likely won't make the 25-man roster unless there's an injury. But he is on a tear -- he hit his sixth home run in the last 10 days on Wednesday and went 4-for-6 with four RBIs. He is now hitting .378.

• Ryan Goins, who likely has won the utility infielder job, had an RBI fielder's choice and played a flawless shortstop.
• Left-hander Brian Flynn, who is out of options and trying to secure a bullpen spot, went two innings and gave up four hits and two runs. He walked none and struck out three. His only real mistake was a two-run homer to Edwin Encarnacion.
Injury update
• Outfielder Paulo Orlando, recovering from a hamstring strain, was back in the lineup on Wednesday night. Orlando went 1-for-3.
• Infielder Raul Mondesi, battling right shoulder impingement, said he began throwing from 90 feet Tuesday. He could be a candidate for extended spring training.
• Outfielder Bubba Starling is still out with a strained oblique. He is likely a candidate for the 60-day disabled list.
