Carroll declines Minors assignment with KC
Veteran infielder opts for free agency; Arguelles placed on 40-man
KANSAS CITY -- Veteran infielder Jamey Carroll's stay with the Royals was a brief one.
Carroll elected free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Kansas City's Triple-A club at Omaha. The Royals needed a spot on the 40-man roster to reinstate left-handed pitcher Noel Arguelles from the 60-day disabled list.
The Royals obtained Carroll from the Twins for cash or a player to be named on Aug. 11. He got into just 14 games for KC, going just 4-for-36 (.111), but his last hit -- a double off the White Sox's Chris Sale on Sept. 27 -- was the 1,000th of his career.
Carroll, 39, also played 59 games for the Twins and finished the season at .211 with nine doubles and 11 RBIs. He's also played for the Expos/Nationals, Rockies, Indians and Nationals during his 12-year Major League career.
Arguelles, 23, who had a groin injury and had shoulder issues in the past, was scheduled to pitch in an Arizona Fall League game on Friday. He was limited to 28 games (13 starts) for three Minor League teams this season. Most of his time was spent with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, and he was 1-8 with a 5.93 ERA in 25 games.
