Career timeline: Buster Posey

2007: The Seminole star

A onetime shortstop, Gerald Dempsey "Buster" Posey III began catching during his sophomore year at Florida State. Safe to say it was a smart move.

2008: Giant beginnings

After winning virtually every major award during his junior year at Florida State, Posey was selected by the Giants with the fifth overall pick of the 2008 MLB Draft.

Sept. 11, 2009: Big league arrival

About 15 months after being drafted, the 22-year-old Posey debuted for the Giants. He recorded the first of his 1,500 career hits eight days later.

May 29, 2010: Here to stay

Posey truly arrived when the Giants promoted him from Triple-A Fresno the following May. He went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in his season debut and never looked back.

2010: Rookie sensation

Posey went on to win NL Rookie of the Year honors, leading the Giants to their first World Series title since moving to San Francisco in 1958.

May 25, 2011: A devastating setback

Posey suffered a season-ending left ankle injury after the Marlins’ Scott Cousins plowed into him, prompting MLB to institute a rule change regarding home-plate collisions.

2012: The comeback kid

Posey rebounded from the catastrophic injury with the best season of his career, hitting .336/.408/.549 with 24 homers and 103 RBIs in 148 games to capture NL MVP honors.

June 13, 2012: Buster hugs

Posey was also behind the plate for Matt Cain’s perfect game against the Astros, the first of four no-hitters he caught for the Giants.

Oct. 11, 2012: Slamming the door in Cincy

One of Posey’s most iconic postseason moments came in Game 5 of the 2012 NLDS, when he crushed a grand slam to cap the Giants’ improbable comeback vs. the Reds.

2013: Face of the franchise

After winning the second of his three World Series titles with the Giants, Posey signed a nine-year, $167 million extension, the biggest contract in franchise history.

2016: Golden boy

Posey unseated the Cards' Yadier Molina as the top defensive catcher in the National League when he won his first and only Gold Glove.

April 1, 2021: A triumphant return

After sitting out the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Posey returned to action on Opening Day '21 and homered in his first plate appearance of the year.

Oct. 8, 2021: One last blast

Posey hit his final homer in Game 1 of the 2021 NLDS, just missing a splash landing when his two-run shot hit a water cannon in right field.

Nov. 4, 2021: Hanging up the spikes

Despite his resurgent campaign, the 34-year-old Posey surprisingly announced his retirement at the end of the 2021 season, ending his iconic 12-year run in San Francisco.

Sept. 21, 2022: Forever Giant

In 2022, the Giants announced that Posey had bought into the team’s ownership group, making him one of 31 partners.
