DETROIT -- April showers haven’t brought May flowers in Michigan just yet, but May showers on Tuesday will bring a Major League debut for another Tigers pitching prospect.

Tuesday’s Tigers-Pirates game was postponed due to rain. The two teams will instead play a traditional doubleheader Wednesday. The opener will begin at 1:10 p.m. ET, with the second game starting shortly after the first game ends.

The Tigers announced they’ll use their extra roster spot for the doubleheader to call up former first-round pick Alex Faedo, who will make his Major League debut as Detroit’s starting pitcher for Game 2. Michael Pineda, who had been scheduled to start Tuesday, will start Game 1.

The Pirates will start Dillon Peters in Game 1, followed by José Quintana in Game 2.

Tickets for Tuesday’s rained-out game can be exchanged for any Tigers home game in the next 12 months, other than their 2023 home opener. Fans holding tickets for Tuesday’s game who would like to attend Wednesday’s doubleheader will need to exchange them. Only tickets for Wednesday will be honored for the doubleheader.

Fans who had tickets to the Tigers’ Bark in the Park event scheduled for Tuesday will have their tickets automatically moved to the next scheduled Bark in the Park on Aug. 31.

Faedo, the Tigers’ No. 16 prospect, will make his Major League debut exactly one week after he made his Triple-A debut with five scoreless innings and eight strikeouts for Triple-A Toledo against Omaha. He pitched in three games for Single-A Lakeland as part of his return from Tommy John surgery, which sidelined him for all of last season.

It’s a quick callup, but the combination of Faedo’s maturity and his arsenal, including a slider that has returned to form nicely after surgery, put him squarely in the Tigers’ plans for a callup sooner or later this season.

“He was a first-round pick for a reason,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said after watching Faedo throw in Spring Training in March.

Faedo made 34 starts over a season and a half at Double-A Erie in 2018 and '19, so he was an advanced prospect before his surgery.
