DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced that the club has agreed to terms on one-year contracts with lefthanded pitchers Matthew Boyd, Blaine Hardy and Daniel Norris. The club has avoided arbitration with each of the three players.
Boyd, 27, started a career-high 31 games in 2018 and went 9-13 with a 4.39 ERA (170.1IP/83ER) and 159 strikeouts, which were the second-most in a season by a Detroit lefthanded pitcher since 1974, trailing only Mickey Lolich, who fanned 202 batters that season. Boyd finished the season ranked 10th in the American League with a .228 (146x639) opponents batting average. Among AL pitchers following the All-Star break, he ranked seventh with a 1.08 WHIP and 10th with a .230 (63x274) opponents batting average. Boyd has made 90 appearances, including 86 starts, in his Major League career, posting a 22-35 record with a 5.07 ERA (460.0IP/259ER) and 394 strikeouts.
Hardy, 31, pitched in 30 games, including 13 starts, in 2018, posting a 4-5 record with one save, a 3.56 ERA (86.0IP/34ER) and 66 strikeouts. He also made nine appearances, including four starts, with Triple A Toledo and went 3-0 with a 1.03 ERA (26.1IP/3ER) and 34 strikeouts. In 194 appearances, including 13 starts, at the Major League level, Hardy has compiled a 13-9 record with one save, a 3.60 ERA (245.1IP/98ER) and 200 strikeouts.
Norris, 25, was limited to 11 appearances, including eight starts, with the Tigers last season, and went 0-5 with a 5.68 ERA (44.1IP/28ER) and 51 strikeouts. In five seasons at the Major League level, Norris has posted a 12-17 record with a 4.56 ERA (282.0IP/143ER) and 257 strikeouts.
