Tigers agree to terms with Joba Chamberlain
DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers announced today that the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with righthanded pitcher Joba Chamberlain.
"We are pleased to add an experienced pitcher like Joba to our roster," said Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski. "Joba is an established reliever who can help fill the seventh and eighth inning role for our club, and will be a nice addition to our bullpen."
Chamberlain, 28, compiled a 2-1 record, a 4.93 ERA (42.0IP/23ER) and 38 strikeouts in 45 relief appearances for the New York Yankees during the 2013 season.
Originally drafted by the Yankees in Compensation Round A (41st overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, Chamberlain has played seven seasons at the major league level with the Yankees, posting a 23-14 record, 3.85 ERA (444.2IP/190ER) and 446 strikeouts in 260 career appearances. Since his debut in 2007, he ranks ninth among AL relievers with 9.69 strikeouts per nine innings (minimum 220.0 IP).
To create a spot on the 40-man roster, the Tigers have designated infielder Danny Worth for assignment. Additionally, infielder Dixon Machado cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple A Toledo.
