Finale vs. Twins postponed due to rain

May 9th, 2021

DETROIT -- Sunday’s series finale between the Tigers and Twins has been postponed due to rain. They’ll play it on Friday, July 16, as part of a split doubleheader beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET at Comerica Park.

While Sunday’s rain wasn’t heavy, it was fairly constant and scheduled to go on for much of the afternoon as part of a weather system stretching from near Chicago to Philadelphia, with Detroit on the northern fringe.

Though Monday is a scheduled off-day for both teams, the Twins make one more trip to Detroit right after the All-Star break. The split doubleheader will start that series, which becomes a four-game set. All paid tickets for Sunday’s rained-out game will be honored for the first game of the doubleheader, with no exchange necessary. Tickets for the originally scheduled July 16 game will be honored for the nightcap, which starts at 7:10 p.m.

Sunday’s rainout also means Matthew Boyd will have to wait a couple extra days for his return to the Tigers rotation after left knee tendinitis. He’ll start Tuesday’s series opener against the Royals, his first start since April 29, followed by Casey Mize on Wednesday and Spencer Turnbull on Thursday. Mize and Turnbull will be pitching on six days’ rest between the rainout and Monday’s off-day.

Tarik Skubal, who was originally scheduled to start on Wednesday, will get pushed back as the Tigers continue to watch his innings workload. He’s expected to start at some point during next weekend’s series against the Cubs.
