Tigers Purchase Contract of Luis Cessa

Club Declines Option for 2016 Season on Joe Nathan

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has purchased the contract of righthanded pitcher Luis Cessa from Triple A Toledo.

Cessa, 23, posted an 8-10 record, 4.52 ERA (139.1IP/70ER), and 119 strikeouts over 25 starts between Double A Binghamton, Triple A Las Vegas and Triple A Toledo during the 2015 season. He was named a mid-season All-Star for Binghamton of the Eastern League. Over his minor league career, he has posted a 32-30 record and 3.68 ERA (513.2IP/210ER) over 86 starts (95 appearances). Cessa was acquired from the New York Mets along with righthanded pitcher Michael Fulmer on July 31 in exchange for outfielder Yoenis Cespedes. A native of Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico, Cessa was originally signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent on July 9, 2008.

Additionally, the club has declined its option for the 2016 season on righthanded pitcher Joe Nathan, resulting in his free agency.

The Tigers 40-man roster now stands at 35.
