Call overturned after Twins challenge

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins manager Ron Gardenhire successfully challenged a pickoff play at first base involving Joe Mauer in the sixth inning of Thursday's game against the Red Sox at Target Field.

Mauer was originally ruled out by first-base umpire Sean Barber on a throw from catcher David Ross to first base that would have ended the inning with Brian Dozier at second base and Trevor Plouffe at the plate.

But Gardenhire requested a challenge, and after a review the call was overturned, as first baseman Mike Napoli didn't get the tag down on Mauer in time.

As a result, Plouffe got another chance against right-hander Clay Buchholz but struck out looking two pitches later to strand Mauer and Dozier.
