April 22nd, 2019

BALTIMORE -- However long 's latest callup lasts, the White Sox are determined to enjoy his company.

After beginning the season at Triple-A Charlotte, the outfielder arrived on Monday at the visitors’ clubhouse at Camden Yards to a stream of high fives and hugs from joyous teammates. Manager Rick Renteria slotted the lefty Delmonico immediately into the No. 6 spot in the lineup and in left field for the series opener against the Orioles.

“It’s definitely awesome coming in here and seeing all the guys,” Delmonico said. “I don’t know how long it is for, but I’m going to do everything I can to help them win, so we’ll see.”

Delmonico has played 131 games over the past two seasons with the White Sox, and he has been with the organization since 2015. He was recalled to replace rookie outfielder , who was placed on the bereavement list after the death of his grandmother.

“We all love Nick,” Renteria said. “We have a situation right now where we need him. And he’s going to come up and hopefully do a nice job of filling in until Eloy gets back.”

Delmonico, 26, is batting .286/.382/.540 with seven doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs and 13 runs in 17 games with Charlotte this season. Two of those homers came Sunday during a 3-for-5 performance.

“I felt good, especially my last game,” Delmonico said. “I felt like I kind of went off a little bit. I feel good; I feel like I kind of found something and I’m just going to keep going.”

Jimenez is hitting .231/.286/.372 with two doubles, three home runs, eight RBIs and six runs in 20 games this season. Renteria said the 22-year-old called him late last night to give him the news about his grandmother, who lived in Jimenez’s native Dominican Republic.

Jimenez will travel there this week. Renteria expects he’ll return for the White Sox home series this weekend against the Tigers.

“He’s close to his grandmother,” Renteria said of the trip. “It’s the right thing for him to do.”

Giolito getting well?

Renteria said right-hander (right hamstring strain) may throw from flat ground Tuesday, and he hopes Giolito will be able to return “a couple days” after the 10-day injured list window closes Sunday.

Giolito (2-1, 5.30 ERA) has made four starts for the White Sox this season. He departed in his last one on Thursday after throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings in what finished a 4-3 loss to the Royals.
