The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year, $4-million contract with veteran outfielder Jon Jay and have designated outfielder Charlie Tilson for assignment.

Jay, 33, split the 2018 season between Kansas City and Arizona, combining to hit .268 (141-527) with 19 doubles, seven triples, three home runs, 40 RBI and 74 runs scored over 143 games. His seven triples were a career high, while his 74 runs scored and 586 plate appearances both were the second-highest marks of his career.

Jay, 5-foot-11 and 195 pounds, batted .307 (73-238) in 59 games with the Royals last season before being traded to the Diamondbacks on June 6 as part of a three-player deal. "Jon is a veteran major leaguer who can help a team win in any number of ways," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. "From getting on base consistently, to being a solid hitter, smart baserunner and solid defender at all three outfield spots, Jon makes any team better."

Jay, a native of Miami, is a career .285 (1,030-3,609) hitter with 176 doubles, 25 triples, 36 homers, 327 RBI, 513 runs scored and a .352 on-base percentage over nine major-league seasons with St. Louis (2010-15), San Diego (2016), the Cubs (2017), Kansas City (2018) and Arizona (2018). He has batted .275 or better in seven of his nine seasons in the majors.

Jay owns a .996 career fielding percentage in the outfield, the highest among all active players. He has 67 career games of postseason experience, including 13 in the World Series.

Tilson, 26, batted .264 (28-106) with 11 RBI and seven runs scored over 41 games with the White Sox in 2018. He spent the majority of last season with Class AAA Charlotte, batting .244 (66-270) over 67 games.
