Robert day to day with contusion on left hand

April 21st, 2019

DETROIT -- Luis Robert, ranked as the No. 37 prospect overall by MLB Pipeline, departed the second game of a doubleheader for Class A Advanced Winston-Salem on Saturday night for precautionary reasons with soreness in his left hand. Robert was listed as day to day with a contusion.

Craig Dedelow pinch-hit for Robert with one out in the third inning after Robert grounded out in his first at-bat. Robert finished 1-for-2 with a walk and his seventh stolen base in Game 1 on Saturday.

The 21-year-old has been crushing Carolina League opposition this season with a .475 average, 1.446 OPS, six home runs, 18 RBIs and 16 runs scored. Robert actually has a Major League-ready skillset, but his biggest issue has been staying healthy for a full season.

Due to a pair of thumb injuries in 2018, Robert was limited to 50 games and 186 at-bats. He didn’t debut with Class A Kannapolis until June 5 last season due to a sprained ligament in his left thumb sustained during Spring Training.

Giolito feeling good

The hope for right-hander Lucas Giolito is to miss just one start due to a strained left hamstring sustained in the third inning of Wednesday’s strong start against the Royals.

“I don’t know how the [injured list] works. I’ve never been on the [injured list], but I feel very close to 100 percent right now,” Giolito said. “Hopefully just get back out there as soon as I can.

“I’m throwing. I haven’t taken a day off throwing. I even threw the day after the injury. I just strained it so I couldn’t get over that front leg during the game. But we’ve been on top of everything, all the rehab stuff, all the PT stuff. I feel really good.”

Giolito has not thrown a side session, but he hopes to do so in the next few days. He also understands the White Sox will err on the side of caution, giving up a start or two more in the short term to make sure he’s healthy for the season.

“Unless you get into that stress position that he gets to with that front leg, he hyperextends that leg all the time. Until you get into that stress position at full force, you really don’t know where you are at,” manager Rick Renteria said. “Right now, he feels great. We would rather be more cautious than try to rush him.”

Banuelos takes the mound

When Manny Banuelos takes the mound on Monday against the Orioles at Camden Yards, it will be the southpaw’s first start since Sept. 6, 2015 with the Braves in Washington. Banuelos was stretched out as a starter during Spring Training and he is ready to make the jump from long relief.

“Most of my career I've been a starter,” said Banuelos, who threw 43 pitches on April 15 against the Royals in his last outing. “I'm not going to have any trouble getting into it. I don't know how many pitches, how many innings I'm going, but I'm going to do my best.”

Saturday’s rainout moved Ervin Santana from Saturday to Wednesday in Baltimore. The move also gives Carlos Rodon an extra two days with Thursday’s off-day.

Minor adjustments

Right-hander Zack Burdi and outfielder Luis Basabe will join Kannapolis from extended spring on Monday. Burdi, ranked as the White Sox No. 16 prospect and sidelined by a lat strain, ultimately is targeted for Triple-A Charlotte. Basabe, who had surgery to remove a broken hamate bone in his left hand during Spring Training, eventually will move to Double-A Birmingham.
