CHICAGO -- White Sox catcher left with lower back stiffness in the sixth inning of Monday’s 7-2 victory over the Tigers during the series opener at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Grandal, who is one of the seven White Sox players to homer in the last two games, fielded an Austin Romine tapper in front of the plate and threw him out at first base. But he walked off the field with an athletic trainer shortly thereafter, replaced by . Grandal is listed as day to day.

“It wasn't that it was an injury, he just started developing some tightness,” White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. “The inning that we took him out when he came in, prior to going back out to defend, he mentioned that he had started feeling a little stiffness, a little tightness.

“After the play in front of the plate with the Romine ball, he looked in and we just went out to talk to him. He said he just felt himself tightening up, so it didn't make any sense to leave him there. Obviously, we had Mac working out and stretching a little bit to try to get him ready.”

The White Sox are deep at catcher with McCann, who was a 2019 All-Star and is off to a strong start this season, as well as . But even as this run of maladies for the team continues, there’s no time for excuses.

“We've got to keep going,” said shortstop , who homered twice Monday. “Things don't slow down. I'm sure that [Grandal] is going to get the treatment that he needs. But the game don't stop for nobody. We've got to keep going and keep rolling.”
