Bruised foot might sideline Stewart a few days

NEW YORK -- Chris Stewart left Sunday's 4-3 win against the Red Sox after suffering a bruised left foot.

The Yankees catcher said he wasn't quite sure when he suffered the injury, but said it could have happened when he got hit by a pitch from Red Sox starter Jon Lester in the third inning.

Stewart said his foot started throbbing and he couldn't put much weight on it. X-rays taken of the foot came back negative and didn't show anything broken.

Stewart remained in the game until the sixth inning, saying he wanted to play as long as starter Hiroki Kuroda was still pitching. Kuroda's afternoon ended after six frames, and Austin Romine pinch-hit for Stewart in the bottom of the sixth and replaced him behind the plate in the seventh.

"It's nothing bad. It's mild," Stewart said. "I was able to get through it, get Hiro through the game, and that's what we were trying to do. Get that done and get somebody else in there."

He finished Sunday's game 1-for-1 with a single and a run scored.

Stewart said he will see how the foot feels Monday morning and go from there. He hopes to "be out there tomorrow," when the Yankees take on the Orioles in Baltimore.

Manager Joe Girardi was slightly less optimistic.

"We don't expect it to be too many days," Girardi said, "but it might be a couple."
