Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday after an MRI revealed inflammation in his right rotator cuff.
Nova originally felt stiffness in his shoulder while pitching in Tuesday night's loss to the White Sox and flew back to New York to have his shoulder examined by team physician Christopher Ahmad. Recovery from the inflammation will consist of medicine and rest, including not playing catch for five days.
Nova conceded six runs off seven hits, including two homers, over six innings of work Tuesday, then informed manager Joe Girardi and pitching coach Larry Rothschild of some discomfort in his shoulder prior to the seventh inning.
With Nova hitting the DL, the Yankees are likely to keep right-hander David Phelps in the rotation when ace CC Sabathia is activated from his stint on the DL in time to start Friday in Cleveland.
On the season, the 25-year-old Nova is 11-7 with a 4.92 ERA in 25 starts.
