Calf strain forces Jeter back to disabled list

CHICAGO -- The Yankees announced before Monday's game against the White Sox that shortstop Derek Jeter has been placed on the 15-day disabled list. The move came two days after an MRI revealed a Grade 1 strain of his right calf.

"It's probably a better idea to put him on the DL than to test it in nine days, 10 days, 11 days, and then have a setback," manager Joe Girardi said.

The 39-year-old Jeter has had multiple setbacks, resulting in him playing in only five games this season.

He made his season debut July 11 after a pair of fractures in his ankle suffered in last year's American League Championship Series forced him to miss the first half of the season. He injured his quadriceps in his season debut, sending him back to the DL.

"It's been terrible. It's been like a nightmare," Jeter said Sunday of facing yet another injury. "The whole season has been a nightmare."

The Yankees made two other moves Monday in addition to activating third baseman Alex Rodriguez, recalling infielder David Adams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designating infielder Brent Lillibridge for assignment.

In 38 games with the Yankees, Adams hit .198 (25-for-126) with two home runs and 11 RBIs.

"[Adams] has been playing more first and third and we'll use him there," Girardi said.
