Contusion in foot has Hafner out of lineup

NEW YORK -- Travis Hafner wasn't in the starting lineup on Friday night, but manager Joe Girardi said he could use his designated hitter if he needed to.

Hafner left Wednesday's game against the Royals with a contusion in his left foot after fouling off a ball while taking swings in the batting cages during the game. He is listed as day to day.

"Other than it being numb, it didn't feel too bad," Hafner said after the game. "So I think I should be all right."

The veteran has struggled at the plate after getting off to a hot start in April. He's batting just .175 since May 1, and he hasn't hit a home run since June 25.

Overall, he's batting .215 with 12 home runs and 37 RBIs.

"I feel good," he said. "I just want to go out there, contribute and help the team."
