LeMahieu's 'out there to rip your heart out'

In short stint with Yankees, infielder has delivered in clutch moments

January 15th, 2021

NEW YORK -- 's teammates have frequently marveled at the right-handed stroke that has littered the Yankee Stadium outfield with clean hits throughout the past two seasons. The infielder's frosty, robotic efficiency once prompted catcher Gary Sánchez to announce: "He's the machine!" The nickname stuck.

"If you watch DJ, he's certainly quiet and businesslike -- all true," manager Aaron Boone once said. "But he'll show some emotion on the field. I've seen a number of times where he'll come up and he's pumping his fists. He's out there to rip your heart out."

As LeMahieu prepares to continue his career in pinstripes, moving toward the finish line on a six-year deal worth $90 million, here are five of LeMahieu's most clutch moments in a Yankees uniform so far:

1. Game 6, 2019 American League Championship Series
Down to their final strike of the ALCS, there was no one the Yankees would rather have had at the plate. LeMahieu jumped on a 3-2 pitch from Astros closer Roberto Osuna, using his inside-out swing to slug a game-tying drive just over the right-field wall. LeMahieu's third home run of the postseason became a footnote a half-inning later when Jose Altuve's homer secured Houston the AL pennant.

"Once DJ hit that two-run homer -- a great at-bat by him, battling tough pitches from one of the best closers in the game," said Aaron Judge. "That was impressive. That's why he's an MVP; he comes up big in situations like that. It's a roller coaster of emotions, from DJ tying it up in the ninth to Altuve walking it off there."

2. Game 1, 2019 AL Division Series
Playing his first postseason game in a Yankees uniform, LeMahieu set the tone, collecting four RBIs in a 10-4 victory over the Twins. LeMahieu launched a sixth-inning home run off reliever Cody Stashak to open up a two-run lead, then ripped a three-run double in the seventh off Kyle Gibson that put the game out of reach.

"Every time DJ is in the box, I just enjoy it," Sánchez said that night. "He's done it all year. I was actually in the video room when he came up with the bases loaded. I said, 'Let me go outside because I want to watch this double.' That's what happened. He's just a great ballplayer all around."

3. Game 2, 2020 AL Wild Card Series
Silenced by Indians pitchers in his first four at-bats of the evening, LeMahieu delivered in his fifth trip, helping to send his teammates to the ALDS against the Rays in San Diego. After Sánchez lifted a ninth-inning sacrifice fly to tie the game, LeMahieu stroked a go-ahead hit off closer Brad Hand, giving the Yankees a 10-9 lead in the longest nine-inning game played.

"I'm 47 years old; I've watched a lot of baseball," Boone said. "I don't know how you top that one -- the amount of back and forth, big moments and plays by different guys. With how long it was, I'm glad we don't have to come back and play tomorrow."

4. May 7, 2019, vs. Mariners
Enjoying one of his first big moments as a Yankee, LeMahieu stroked a walk-off single to complete a come-from-behind 5-4 victory on a rainy evening in the Bronx. LeMahieu's hit came off Roenis Elías after Gio Urshela tied the game with a homer off Anthony Swarzak. LeMahieu was on base four times in five plate appearances.

"We didn't have a whole lot going there," LeMahieu said. "For [Urshela] to hit that homer, it just gave us new life there. Once he tied it up, I got the feeling, all of us on the bench were like, 'All right, we're going to win this game somehow.' It was a fun ending."

5. Aug. 31, 2019, vs. Athletics

LeMahieu was hitless in four at-bats when he strode to the plate in the 11th inning on this long afternoon, shadows encroaching upon the playing field. He put an end to the theatrics, launching a walk-off homer off Lou Trivino to secure a 4-3 victory. The win was the Yanks' first in five tries against Oakland that season and continued to spark MVP discussion surrrounding LeMahieu, especially in New York's dugout.

Always a blue-collar man of few words, here's what LeMahieu offered after his Gatorade bath: “I didn’t really help the team too much at the plate today, so it was good to come through there at the end. Yeah, it felt good.”
