New York Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres has been named the American League Player of the Week presented by W.B. Mason for the period ending September 2. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

Torres batted .478 (11-for-23) with three runs scored, three home runs, 10 RBI, five walks and a stolen base across seven games played to earn his second AL Player of the Week Award this season (also May 27th), and the second of his career. Among qualified AL leaders, Gleyber finished the week first in batting average; tied for first in RBI; second in hits and on-base percentage (.571); tied for fourth in home runs, walks and total bases (20); and eighth in slugging percentage. This is the third weekly honor of the 2018 campaign for the Yankees, following Gleyber's double-play partner Didi Gregorius (April 29th) and his previous award (May 29th).

Torres, who was traded in July 2016 in the deal that sent All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs, enters play today in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak dating back to August 27th. On Saturday against the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium, the Venezuelan native clubbed his 22nd home run of the season. Torres reached the 22-homer mark in his 98th career game at the age of 21 years, 262 days. Gleyber became the eighth player in Major League history to reach the milestone in as few games, joining fellow rookie sensation Ronald Acuña Jr., Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, Tony Conigliaro, Bob Horner, Albert Pujols, Carlos Correa and his teammate Giancarlo Stanton. Following yesterday's contest against the Tigers, the 21-year-old has collected two RBI in each of the previous four games, tied for the longest multi-RBI streak by a Yankee this season, matching backstop Austin Romine (May 20th-26th) and Gregorius (April 22nd-25th). The streak is tied for the seventh-longest in franchise history. Entering play today, the AL Rookie of the Year candidate is slashing .282/.351/.511 with 46 runs scored, 12 doubles, 22 home runs and 66 RBI across 99 games played. Torres is on pace to become the first player since All-Star Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels to bat .280-or-better with 22 home runs and 60 RBI in a season younger than 22 years old.

All-Star infielder Alex Bregman (.444, 6 R, 3 2B, 3 HR) of the Houston Astros also posted a deserving week. The 24-year-old slugger registered an 11-game hitting streak from August 19th-30th, leading the surging Astros to an 8-3 record. During his hot stretch at the plate, Bregman slashed .455/.520/.705 with 20 hits, five doubles, two home runs, 11 RBI and five walks, while only striking out once. The LSU product finished his strong week at the plate by clubbing homers in back-to-back games over the weekend. Other noteworthy performances last week included first baseman/outfielder Trey Mancini (.375, 7 R, 5 XBH, 9 RBI) of the Baltimore Orioles; outfielder Stephen Piscotty (5 R, 8 H, 3 HR, 10 RBI) and relief pitcher Blake Treinen (3 G, 3 SV, 0.00 ERA, 0 H) of the Oakland Athletics; All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts (.429, 2 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI) of the Boston Red Sox; and starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 3.21 ERA, 14.0 IP, 20 SO) of the Cleveland Indians.
