deGrom, Cole named Pitchers of the Month

May 3rd, 2021

One city, two award-winning aces. Mets right-hander and Yankees right-hander have been named the Pitchers of the Month for April in their respective leagues. It's the first time since the award was introduced to the AL in 1979 that winners from both leagues came from New York.

deGrom has two National League Cy Young Awards, but until Monday he had never earned the Pitcher of the Month Award. deGrom becomes the first Mets pitcher to win the award since Matt Harvey in 2013.

Over five starts in April, deGrom posted a 0.51 ERA with 59 K’s, four walks and 16 hits allowed in 35 innings. Opponents hit .136 against him. deGrom registered a career-high 15 strikeouts in a two-hit shutout against the Nationals on April 23, part of a stretch of three straight starts with at least 14-plus K's.

deGrom had 50 strikeouts over his first four starts, eclipsing Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan and Shane Bieber for the most by a pitcher in his first four starts of a season.

In his second year with the Bronx Bombers, Cole made six starts in the season’s first month and went 4-1 with a 1.43 ERA, 62 strikeouts and three walks. He held opposing hitters to a .178 average.

Cole’s 62 strikeouts were the second most by a Yankees pitcher in any calendar month, trailing only Ron Guidry’s 64 in June 1978, the same year the left-hander won the American League Cy Young Award.

Dating back to June 2019, Cole now has won four of the past seven American League Pitcher of the Month Awards. He’s the first Yankee to win the award since Masahiro Tanaka in 2014.
