Tino joins Marlins' staff as hitting coach
Former Yankee great won four World Series titles in New York
Tino Martinez, a four-time World Series winner while with the Yankees, has been named Miami's hitting coach. Martinez, 44, played 16 seasons, including a tenure on New York's title teams in 1996, '98, '99 and 2000.
A career .271 hitter, Martinez is a native of Tampa, Fla. He is the first major hire for new Marlins manager Mike Redmond.
Miami is still finalizing its staff. The Marlins are searching for a bench coach and pitching coach. Martinez replaces Eduardo Perez, who recently was hired as Houston's bench coach.
Offense was an area of concern for Miami in 2012. The club scored 609 runs, which ranked 15th in the National League, and its team batting average of .244 was 13th out of 16 in the NL.
Timely hitting also was a concern, with the team batting .234 with runners in scoring position.
The Marlins' staff now includes Martinez, Perry Hill (infield/first base), Joe Espada (third base) and Reid Cornelius (bullpen coach).
Martinez, a former first baseman, was a first-round Draft pick of the Mariners in 1988. A left-handed hitter, he played for the Yankees, Mariners, Cardinals and Devil Rays, retiring in 2005.
